Frz. quoi als Diskursmarker
This contribution deals with the different uses of French quoi as a discourse marker. These uses are described in such a way that it will become clear why in certain circumstances the use of quoi, as pointed out in the recent literature (cf. Beeching 2006), counts as polite. It will, however, also become clear why, in other circumstances, its use is considered downright impolite. The second aspect of quoi that is discussed in this article concerns its still ill-understood use to mark the closure of a problematic (i.e. unsmooth, disfluent) formulation. It will be argued that Chafe's (1994) and Langacker's (2001) notion of attentional framing provides a useful basis for a more complete understanding of this type of use
DelokutivitÀt, Possessive und die italienischen Verwandtschaftsbezeichnungen
This contribution is about a hitherto unexplained phenomenon of Italian syntax, i.e. the lack of a determiner in nominal expressions of a certain type that contain a possessive and a kinship noun as its scope, despite the fact that possessives normally require a determiner. So, my car is la mia macchina in Italian, whereas my son translates as mio figlio. It is argued that a plausible solution to this puzzle can be given by using Benveniste's notion of delocutivity. Therefore, the first part of the article presents the concept of delocutivity, mainly drawing on French examples. The main purpose of this introductory part is to show that the class of delocutive expressions is not restricted to verbs
Innate immunity, oxidative stress and body indices of Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis after twoâweeks of exposure to artificial light at night
Artificial light at night (ALAN) can disrupt biological rhythms of fish and other vertebrates by changing the light information of the nocturnal environment. Disrupted biorhythms can impair the immune system of vertebrates as it has been shown for conditions with continuous illumination or long-day photoperiod in many vertebrates, including fish. Nonetheless, this has not been shown so far for typical ALAN scenarios with high light intensities during day and low light intensities at night. Therefore, in this study, proxies for the innate immune system and oxidative stress as well as body indices of Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis were measured under a wide range of intensities of nocturnal illumination. The authors found no changes in parameters of the innate immune system and no significant changes in proxies for oxidative stress after 2-week exposures to nocturnal illuminance ranging from 0.01âlx to 1âlx in one experiment or from 1âlx to 100âlx in a second experiment. A decrease in the hepato-somatic index at the highest tested light intensity of 100âlx compared to the dark control was the only significant difference in all parameters among treatments. After 2âweeks of exposure, ALAN does not seem to seriously challenge the innate immune system and seems to cause less oxidative stress than expected. The results of this study contradict the findings from other studies applying continuous illumination or long-day photoperiod and highlight the importance of further research in this field. Because ALAN represents a sustained modulation of the environment that may have cumulative effects over time, long-term studies are required for a better understanding of how ALAN modulates the health of fish.Leibniz Association

Closed-loop control of product properties in metal forming
Metal forming processes operate in conditions of uncertainty due to parameter variation and imperfect understanding. This uncertainty leads to a degradation of product properties from customer specifications, which can be reduced by the use of closed-loop control. A framework of analysis is presented for understanding closed-loop control in metal forming, allowing an assessment of current and future developments in actuators, sensors and models. This leads to a survey of current and emerging applications across a broad spectrum of metal forming processes, and a discussion of likely developments.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (Grant ID: EP/K018108/1)This is the final version of the article. A global agenda for advancing freshwater biodiversity research
Global freshwater biodiversity is declining dramatically, and meeting the challenges of this crisis requires bold goals and the mobilisation of substantial resources. While the reasons are varied, investments in both research and conservation of freshwater biodiversity lag far behind those in the terrestrial and marine realms. Inspired by a global consultation, we identify 15 pressing priority needs, grouped into five research areas, in an effort to support informed stewardship of freshwater biodiversity. The proposed agenda aims to advance freshwater biodiversity research globally as a critical step in improving coordinated actions towards its sustainable management and conservation.Peer reviewe
